Jackie was 53 years old and during that time he endured more than any one man should hare endured. Back in 1945, when Branch Rickey picked him to break the color line in baseball, he was asked to be pioneer beyond comprehension of the average man. He was asked to produce and take abuse upon abuse and he did exactly like he was asked.

When Jackie came along, baseball was suffering and it can be said very safely that Jackie Robinson gave baseball more of boost than anyone before or since. Jackie showed all that Negroes or Blacks belonged in baseball and wim the coming of Blacks in baseball many new. and good baseball players came forward and with the Blacks doing well in baseball, they begin to come in great numbers in all of the major sports both on'the collegiate level and the professional level. Jackie came to majors to play when he was 28 years old, rather old for a rookie and stayed for ten years but doing that time he turned baseball around and made his marks on and off the field. The one that Robinson did and he is to forever praised for it and thataiwaygwy gave his opinion whether it was popular or not, in the end Jackie was more often right than wrong.

On one of his last public appearances when he was honored during this year's World Series, he thanked the people that made his award possible, but he also said that it was past time for baseball to come up with a Black manager. During the past quarter of century two warriors have come on the scene and left their marks. Both of them were Georgian by birth Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jackie Robinson. Both of them were warriors of the highest kind and both of them had to endure morethan most any one else and both of them endured the sufferings necessary to change the consciences of America and I firmly believe that the masses in America are better because of the lives of the two men, though they mostjperformed in different arena, they performed well and left their marks on all of us that are left behind.

The two warriors believed strongly that one should be given a chance sorely on his ability and not the hue of his skin. When the young athlete, the Black athlete is recruited and given the fruits of a professional career, he should be forever reminded that Jackie Robinson and others suffered and suffered dearly to make all of this possible for there was a time not too long ago, that the Black athlete was less than a man to many people and stood little if any chance to prove their worth. Jackie Robinson gave us pride and the desire to prove to all who would listen or witness that the Black man could produce and will produce. May the legacy of Jackie Robinson, true warrior forever live in the hearts and the minds of the youth of mankind regardless of race, creed or sex. He left a great legacy.

For the next two quarters no scoring was re corded as the two schools traded the ball several times without producing a scoring threat. Robinson broke the color line in baseball when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. It's hard to describe to anyone who has never seen Jackie Robinson play the excitement he generated when at bat, on the bases or when he made a great play on defense. He turned skill into ability, he turned ability into pressure, he turned pressure Into life, and he made his life a living legend in the world of Robinson, the men who Roger Conn referred to in his book as the Boys of Summer.

The first baseman was Gil Hodges and most of you know that Hodges died last Spring. Jackie Robinson played second and as you know he passed last week. The shortstop was Pee-wee Reese. For many years Reese was a baseball telecaster for CBS and NBC. He is now living in his home town of Louisville, Kentucky.

San Francisco, leading 21-14 at half time, took control in the third period when Spurrier, replacing the injured John Brodie, connected on touchdown passes of 43 yards to Gene Washington and 28 yards to Preston Riley. Meanwhile, the 49er defense kept constant pressure on Atlanta's Bob Berry during that quarter, limiting him to only one completion for six yards and holding the Falcons to only 20 yards and no first downs on five possessions. The victory, San Francisco's first in Atlanta since 1968, squarred its National Conference West record 3-3-1. The Falcons meanwhile, fell to 4-3. Vic Washington's opening kickoff return set the tone for the day as he raced up the middle of the field and was never touched, scoring after only 16 seconds had elapsed.
